Chatham Town’s under-21 manager Karl May has taken the sport of footgolf by storm.

He has just returned from Norway, where he represented the UK in the fast-growing sport just nine months after his first competitive outing.

May, 28, is ranked the No.3 footgolfer in the UK and he’s now targeting a place in next year’s World Cup.

“The World Cup is in Argentina in January and I want to be challenging for a place in the UK squad,” said May, whose wife, Hayley, is the UK’s No.1 woman player.

“I want to represent the UK as much as possible but it is about getting the finances sorted and finding the time as I am a school teacher.”

His trip to Norway last weekend was a success. He finished seventh out of 60 with the second-best UK score.

“I left a few putts too short and with an extra roll they would have all gone in,” said the Lordswood School teacher.

He finished eight shots behind the winner, from Norway but just two behind second place.

May has won all four major events at the Gillingham course on The Strand, breaking the course record several times.

Later this month he’ll be taking part in the South East Open, hoping to further boost his position towards the top of the UK leaderboard.
