St Mary’s teenage boxer Karol Itauma has been selected to represent England at the European Junior Boxing Championships – just 18 months after his first bout.

The 15-year-old, who is already a multiple champion, has just completed an assessment camp at GB headquarters.

He will now fight for England in Hungary at the championships between June 18 and 26.

Itauma fought competitively for the first time in November 2014 and since then, the Chatham-based boxer has won four national titles and the tri-nations gold medal a fortnight ago.

The Greenacre School pupil has been coached by Dan Woledge, Dave Bowler and Jerome Xavier over the last two years and Xavier said: “He listens and tries to put into practice all we tell him.

"He is always polite and just gets on with his training. A lot of boxers could be forgiven for getting a bit big-headed after so much success so quickly but so far he is just taking it all in his stride.

“We are all so proud of his achievements and if he continues to keep his head down and train hard, who knows how far he can go.”
