Gillingham manager Neil Harris says the club will be looking to utilise the loan market in the closing hours of the January transfer window.

The Gills have until 11pm on Tuesday night to complete any deals with contracted players and there’s plenty of scope for adding some loan signings before then.

With Elkan Baggott, Ryan Law and Haji Mnoga gone and goalkeeper Glenn Morris now a permanent addition, the Gills are left with just two loan players on their books, Hakeeb Adelakun (Lincoln City) and newcomer Conor Masterson (QPR).

Clubs can name five in a matchday squad and Harris is still looking for some additional quality to add to his squad to ensure they can pull clear of relegation trouble.

The Gills are still after a striker, a wide-man and a full-back.

Harris said: “We still want to add to the group, we want to add a couple more if possible and I am really pleased with the business we had done, I think everyone is really pleased with the business we have done.

“We have set our standards really high with the players we have brought in.

"Now it will be difficult to do permanent deals between now and Tuesday, so we might be probably looking at loans, same as Conor coming in, there could be outs and hopefully ins as well.”

With head of recruitment Andy Hessenthaler and director of football Kenny Jackett busy helping with deals, it’s left Harris time to concentrate on his team. With eight signings already completed, results have improved.

With funds available, it’s meant the Gills aren’t bottom of the pile when it comes to the transfer pecking order as has been in recent years.

Harris said: “That is the importance of having a recruitment team and a director of football, that takes that pressure away from me while I am preparing for games someone else is doing the deals and organising players coming in.

“We feel we have done really good business so far and the performances and results and goals scored show that we have done really good business and we want to continue that.”

The Gills have a game on Tuesday night as they take a mixed team to Tonbridge Angels for a Kent Senior Cup second round match. Harris expects to be at the match, but won’t be far away from his phone.

“I won’t be taking the game because it is deadline day,” he said. “I expect to be there unless I need to be somewhere else for a reason! I do expect to be at the game.”
