Gillingham’s goalkeeping options have been reduced after Charlton ended the loan of Ashley-Maynard Brewer.

The goalie signed for the Gills in the summer on a season-long deal but suffered a dislocated shoulder during a pre-season friendly match at Dover, leading to manager Neil Harris then turning to experienced stopper Glenn Morris instead.

Morris - on loan from Crawley - has been Gills’ first choice keeper this season, with Jake Turner playing as back-up. Morris suffered an injury of his own last week, against Northampton, and is now expected to be out for around a month, although the club are still awaiting results from a scan.

Maynard-Brewer could have been an option for the Gills as Harris prefers two senior goalkeepers in his squad but Charlton picked up an injury to their own goalkeeper, meaning they have recalled the young stopper.

Joe Wollacott broke a finger in the warm-up before Charlton’s game at Burton on Saturday. He was expected to be heading to the World Cup and starting for Ghana and the club may have recalled Maynard-Brewer regardless of the injury.

Gillingham will now be reliant on Turner - they are unable to bring in another keeper on an emergency loan - until Morris returns to fitness, with youth goalie Taite Holtam offering back-up on the bench.
