Gills skipper Doug Loft set up two goals on Saturday but was left disappointed to be walking away pointless.
Loft’s crosses were headed home by Cody McDonald and John Egan as the Gills fought back from two goals down to level the match.
But the Gills lost 3-2 when Chesterfield struck again with 20 minutes left.
“I’m disappointed,” said the skipper. “We did enough to get back into the game it was a sloppy third goal that we conceded.
“We had enough chances to win it and it would have been nice to have a win going into Christmas.”
After fighting back into the game Loft felt confident the Gills would go on and win.
“We were on top and it looked as if we were going to go and win it,” he said.
“I was feeling confident but their third goal knocked the stuffing out of us. It was hard to come back from that. We had a few chances but it wasn’t to be.
“It’s disappointing to lose but the boys have had a go. It would have been nice for the fans to get behind us a bit more towards the end of the game. That is when we needed them.
“They obviously want to see us win and they are as disappointed as us but they have got to understand that we go away devastated and as disappointed as them. We did all we could but it wasn’t to be. We will go again.”
Loft could have put the Gills ahead as early as the 10 minute on Saturday and he admitted he should have done better from Brennan Dickenson’s inviting cross.
“I lost the flight of the ball and it was a pretty easy chance,” said Loft.
“When the ball came behind the defender I didn’t really see it. Had I read it better it would have been a goal.”
