Gillingham’s new signing Doug Loft believes he’s at a club on the move.

At 27, Loft is keen to keep his career moving forward and he now feels he’s at the right club at the right time to make that happen.

He said: “Gillingham weren’t the only team interested in me but they are a team who I see going places.

“I have played against them in the past, they have always been a hard team to play and are going in the right direction.

“I was in the Championship with Brighton in my first season. It is where I want to be and where I think this club belongs. Hopefully, in a few years, we can be there. If we build on last season, then you never know.

“The chairman has got his dreams and his ambitions and I follow him in those. It is a club destined for the Championship and I am confident I will get us there.

“It is a brilliant club, with a great set-up and a great fanbase. It has all the right attributes to be a success.

“I wouldn’t have come here in the prime of my career if I didn’t think it would be a great time for the club.”

Loft was well thought of at his former club Port Vale, where he was club captain. He played 216 times for the Valiants but is looking forward to a new chapter.

He said: “I see this as a new adventure and I feel I did everything I could have there. I needed a new challenge.”
