Lordswood produced a great performance to earn a point against title-favourites Faversham on Tuesday night and get to play them again on Saturday.

The SCEFL Premier Division game against Faversham at Martyn Grove ended goalless but it might have been even better for Matt Barman’s men, with striker James Jeffrey having a penalty saved and David Falako hitting an effort off the woodwork.

It was a fine response from Lordswood after last Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Corinthian - their heaviest defeat of the season.

Barman’s men now head to Faversham this Saturday when they meet again in the Kent Senior Trophy.

The Lords boss said: “It’s away this time and we know they will be coming back with a reaction. We had ours from the Saturday, they might be thinking it was two points dropped but I felt we left two points out there. Everyone will see it from their own angle.

“We will go there on a nice 3G pitch and try and play football.”

Recent addition Lewis Mingle played his first full match for Lordswood on Tuesday night, adding much-needed experience to a young team. He was a big help for them against a side fancied by many to take the SCEFL Premier Division title this season.

“I thought we played really well,” said the manager.

“We lost on the Saturday. We didn’t play too badly but conceded four goals from outside the box, some good strikes, some we were a little disappointed that we didn’t cut out at source.

“We went into Tuesday’s game off the back of what was by far our biggest defeat of the season, two of my captains were out, one injured and one suspended, we had to change some players around, but I thought we stood up to them and we started to show some really maturity, against a top, top team.

“We worked so hard, we fought for every ball, we had chances, they probably felt like they should have had a penalty after five or 10 minutes, it was a 50-50 call and that could have changed the outlook but from that point on we more than matched Faversham.

“JJ had the penalty saved but that is the life of a centre-froward, one week you are the hero and the next week you are thinking about the chance missed, but there was half an hour still to go, we hit the post five minutes after, from where I was it looked to be going in and then hit the inside of the post and came back out, avoiding everyone running in on it.

“I was happy with the performance and convinced that if we keep performing like that then the results will look after themselves.

“We have brought Lewis Mingle in for a bit of experience due to injuries and suspensions. I have known him for 10-15 years in football, he played for Tunbridge Wells when they went to the Vase that year and he brings a bag of experience.

“He is 100% the grandad of the team but he helped those boys become men on Tuesday. There were some outstanding performances.”

Ryan Neal was captain for the night, stepping into midfield, and he picked up the man-of-the-match award for his performance, but Barman felt there were top performances throughout the team.

Lordswood picked up a couple of injuries on the night with Jay Hards coming off injured at the break and Falako rolling his ankle moments after his shot came off the woodwork. There’s a chance captain Archie Risdon could be back.

Barman said: “I have a couple of injuries, one or two we might need to bring back in, we might freshen it up, we have one back from suspension and Archie is probably 50-50 as it stands, but most of the group are 18-22 and fatigue shouldn’t be an issue, mental fatigue is something we will have to manage in the season because the games are coming thick and fast.”
