Gillingham produced their best performance at home on Saturday since Steve Lovell took charge.

That was the verdict of the Gills boss after their 2-1 home win over Fleetwood moved them up to 10th in League 1.

An own goal and a Tom Eaves penalty in stoppage time saw the Gills come from behind to win a fourth successive league game.

“I’m very happy not just with the result but with the performance,” beamed Lovell.

“I don’t think anybody in the ground can say we didn’t deserve that victory. It’s probably the best we’ve played here at home since I’ve been in charge.

“Fleetwood are a good side, they started off bright and moved the ball around well. We had to weather the first 10 minutes but they scored and Tomas Holy had one more save to make in the second half. Apart from that, he didn’t do anything.

“I thought some of the football we played in the first half was first class. It was probably the best performance by the majority of our team for a while.”

Lovell revealed that he singled out Eaves and strike partner Josh Parker at half-time in front of their team-mates.

The Gills boss wanted more from his forwards, and got the response he desired after the break.

“I had a go at Tom and Josh Parker at half-time,” said Lovell. “I thought all the boys in the first half did well but maybe them two could have done a bit better for us.

“I said if they got in the game a lot more we would win the game. I didn’t want anybody to change the way we played, I just wanted them two to start performing and they did.

“I know Tom scored but Josh had a lot to do as well, he worked hard and got in the game more. It wasn’t one of his best games with the ball but what he brings us without the ball is hard work and he gives us that shape in the team.

“At half-time I said there’s a couple of people in this room who are not doing what they can do. I said I’m going to name them and I went ‘you two’. They don’t argue with me, they take it on board and go fair enough.

“All players, no matter what level, are learning all the time. I can see as a centre-forward you’re not doing the basics right. You do the basics right and we win the game, which is get hold of the ball, pass it, get in the box and get on the end of things. That’s all I’m asking them to do, nothing else.”
