Gillingham coach Steve Lovell believes the team have what it takes to maintain their push for promotion this season.

The Gills are a quarter of the way through their League 1 campaign and head to Chesterfield on Saturday fourth in the table and boasting the Football League’s most potent attack with 22 goals.

With just two defeats behind them, Justin Edinburgh’s team have managed to sustain their positive form so far.

“I would like to think we are there to stay,” said first team coach Lovell. “We are good enough to. It is a very young squad and it’s a great learning curve for them.

“The players will look back at it, no matter what happens, as a major part of their career because it is a start for them. If they can maintain it and keep themselves going then there is no reason why we can’t keep where we are.

“It means we have to start games a little bit better than on Tuesday and have a little more belief in doing what we can do.

“We are in a decent position. It would be lovely to be there come April and pushing for the final two or three weeks but it is still a long way off and still three-quarters of the season left.

“We will keep believing what we are doing and if you have that you have the recipe for success.”
