Max Ehmer is enjoying his football and reaping the benefits.

A new two year deal was handed to the German defender last week as reward for an impressive season at the Gills.

The club have gone from conceding for fun last season to having one of the tightest back lines in the division.

Ehmer credits the good vibes at the club for his form and for making it an easy decision to commit his future to the club until the summer of 2020.

"I am really happy," said the 26-year-old.

"As soon as I got offered (a new contract) it was something I wanted to do.

"I have really enjoyed my time here and hopefully it's the same again for another two years.

"With the way the majority of this season has gone, it's been a pleasure to come in every day. Results always help but since the gaffer took the job it has been upbeat. It makes a massive difference and if you are enjoying it then you do seem to play that bit better, that's the way it has been since the gaffer took over."

Ehmer now has over 200 league appearances to his name, with 134 of them coming at Gillingham. He's been a regular at the back ever since first joining on loan from QPR in the winter of 2014.

He said: "As soon as I came here on loan, I had a really good time. I then signed (permanently) which was a no-brainer.

"You have to take positives out of everything, win or lose, and this season has definitely been one of the best."
