Gills striker Cody McDonald admits the players are making it tough for the manager.
Inconsistent performances have meant Peter Taylor has had to switch his team around more often than he would like.
During Gills’ last outing a poor first half performance meant changes were needed.
“It is hard,” said McDonald, who has previously admitted to his own hit and miss performances this season.
“It must be hard for the manager; he must be so frustrated, because he knows what we are capable of doing.
“He told us a few home truths at half time (against Bristol City) which he should as well. He gave us a kick up the backside and told us that we need to look in the mirror at ourselves.
“We did that a bit in the second half but we lost 3-1 and you can’t take many positive from that.
“If there are any, then the second was much better than the first, but we can’t just keep playing halves in this league. We did that against Colchester as well. We played well first half but not second.
“It is important we put it together for the weekend (against Port Vale) and if we do it we will be fine.
“We have done it in spells and that is why it is frustrating.
“There is some great quality in the squad but it hasn’t quite clicked at the moment. It will do and people will see what great players we have here.”
