Conor Chalmers capped a tremendous second-half fightback as Medway beat Old Colfeians 27-23 in Regional 2 South East.
Colfeians’ centre showed a clean pair of heels to touch down early and the extras gave the hosts an early platform from which they built a 23-3 half-time lead.
Without interventions from Josh Knight, Harry Gibbons, Tom Beaumont and Dan Jackson even more points would have been leaked, while Owen Church-Mills scored Medway’s penalty.
The second-half recovery began when winger Chalmers scored on the overlap, and good work from Max Bullock, Antony Clement and replacement Jack Johnson threatened further points before Jack Johnson dived over. Church-Mills’ conversion put the visitors within eight points.
Medway’s forwards and backs now enjoyed phase after phase of power and pace. Todd Johnson bulldozed over the line with 10 minutes remaining and, with three minutes left, Mac Perry fed Chalmers to cross the whitewash for the winning try. The conversion was good, too, for a 24-0 second-half display.
Medway, in sixth, are back in league action on February 17 at home to third-placed Reeds Weybridge (2.30pm).
