Gills’ star man John Egan had mixed feelings about Saturday’s point.

While Gillingham kept Walsall out one end they failed to produce the killer touch at the other.

“As a team we did okay,” said the former Sunderland player, who picked up the man-of-the-match champagne at Priestfield.

“I suppose it’s two points dropped because we could have pushed on and won the game.

“It’s always nice to keep it tight at the back and keep a clean sheet. Hopefully if we keep performing like that, being nice and solid, the goals will come and we should be okay.”

Despite missing out on a win, Egan felt the point was at least something to be happy with.

He said: “Some people might not be happy with it but it’s a decent result.

“Walsall are a decent side and they did very well last season. They aren’t doing so good this season but they are still good. If we keep the goals out then they will come at the other end.

“I am happy with how I played and happy with the back four. Defensively it was great from 11 of us. We defended from the front. They found it very hard to get through and I think as a unit we did well.”

The goalless draw also extended the Gills’ unbeaten home run in the league to five games.

“We need to keep it like that,” he said.

“Our home form has been decent so far and we could have had a win against Swindon. That was a draw and we could have won this.

“Hopefully we can keep it going and no team will like coming to Priestfield.”
