Gillingham defender Max Ehmer keen to continue partnership with Gabriel Zakuani

Max Ehmer would love it if Gabriel Zakuani signs a new deal at Gillingham.
The pair teamed up this season in central defence and played a key role in putting right the club’s defensive frailties.
Last season they conceded more than any other in League 1 but this time around only one side outside the top six can better their record.
Ehmer said: “I am happy with how the season has gone, personally. Everyone can always do better, but when the gaffer first came in it was everyone’s aim to firstly get safe.
“We were right up there at one point and we have probably let ourselves down with a push for the play-offs.
“Gabs has come in and helped me a lot.”
Asked if he wanted Zakuani to stay, he said: “100%. I hope he does.
“Gabs is a leader and a solid defender and he has helped me loads.
"I have picked one or two bits out of his game and taken it more into my game, where I am now thinking more about safety first.
"Before, maybe I would be a bit too clever, bringing the ball down where I shouldn’t have. Now I defend first.
“He brings experience and leadership to the team and he will be the first to tell you he is not the biggest ball player and not great at passing the ball but he is one of the best defenders I have played next to.
“I have played with some of the boys at the very top, in the Premier League. Gabs, defending-wise, is the best in terms of blocking it and other things. I can’t credit him enough.”
