Gillingham striker Liam Nash set return to pre-season training earlier than scheduled

07:39, 21 May 2018

Striker Liam Nash is planning to start pre-season early so he can get ahead of the game.

The 22-year-old former non-league striker endured a frustrating first season in the professional game after making the step up with the Gills.

He made 13 appearances and just two league starts during the campaign but he’s determined to come back stronger for the new season.

“Next year is definitely the season for me,” he said.

“I will look to come back maybe a week earlier to try and get myself fit and ready and one step ahead to what I was last year and hopefully get a good season.

“Since I was young I have always wanted to be a pro so I don't want to let that slide now. I will keep grafting to give myself the best opportunity.”

Nash joined the Gills from Maldon & Triptree, scoring 37 goals for them in the 2016/17 season.

He found it tough to get into the team after manager Steve Lovell took over, heading out on loan to Leatherhead in November, where he rekindled his scoring form.

He made a handful of substitute appearances on his return but is awaiting his first goal.

He said: “I knew I had to be patient and it was a learning curve for me to come in and train every day, going to the big stadiums.

“I haven't had as many opportunities as I would have liked but I thank the gaffer for the chances he has given me.

“It is hard to adapt and full-time football does take a massive toll on your body. It has given me a little eye-opener about how to look after myself and I am getting there.

“Next year is a new year for me and I have to do the best I can to give me that edge and try and get in the starting 11.”

Despite a tough year, the striker hasn’t lost his confidence.

He said: “Mentally it can be very tough and you start questioning your ability but deep down I do believe in my ability and I know that I can play at this level, if not higher, if given an opportunity.

Fans have continued to back the young striker when he has had those opportunities and he is grateful for that support.

“The fans have been unbelievable to me,” he said.

“I can only thank them for the support they have given me, it has been overwhelming at times. Hopefully next year I can give them something to cheer about.”
