Cody McDonald is confident that a new deal at Gillingham will be agreed soon.
The 28-year-old striker took his goal tally for the campaign to 16 with a brace in the 3-0 win at Swindon.
“It is still ongoing and there are just a little loose ends,” said the frontman after Tuesday night’s win.
“With the chairman out of the country it is a little awkward. There are emails going backwards and forwards with my agents and it is shouldn’t take long from now.
“I am enjoying my game and the sooner we get it done the better.”
McDonald is a free agent in the summer and can negotiate with any club his wishes.
Gills boss Justin Edinburgh knows his striker will be in demand and remains hopeful that a deal will be reached soon.
“It is a critical stage of his career,” said Edinburgh.
“He loves this club and the club and the fans love him. We want it to happen and hopefully we can make it happen.
“I don’t think we are a million miles away. We have to be patient, but not too patient. We want to get something concluded sooner rather than later but it has to be right for both parties.
“There are just a couple of things to iron out and we are hopeful.”
McDonald is one goal away from last season’s tally.
“I hope the goals don’t stop,” said the Gills boss.
“He is a goalscorer but it’s also his all-round play. As disappointed as he was with his performance on Saturday (against Barnsley), he showed a top class performance (at Swindon).”
