Gillingham manager Peter Taylor got a performance he was looking for on Saturday.
The Gills lost their FA Cup first round tie 2-1 against Bristol City but Taylor took heart from the players’ attitude.
Before the game he admitted their current run could result in him being sacked. The Gills have one league win from their last 11 and sit joint-bottom of League 1.
Taylor said: “It is all I can ever ask for at 3pm, that they carry that on for 90 minutes and give it everything they’ve got.
“The players worked as hard as they could to get that win. As long they have a go, show the right attitude and try and win that match then that’s fine.”
Taylor knows he’s under pressure to get results but a positive performance on Saturday was vital, he felt.
He said: “A positive performance was more important in some ways. I wanted the players to show the supporters that they want to win a match. I said earlier in the week that if I was a supporter I would expect to see my team having a go and I think we did that.
"We have an important game on Tuesday (in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Crawley). Hopefully we can have a little bit of luck. I still don’t think we are having a great deal, I am not saying it was bad luck (on Saturday) but I think we need something to go for us in a game to get a win.”
