Gillingham boss Peter Taylor was happy to win a point but was critical of his team’s quality.

Taylor’s men drew 0-0 at Oldham on Saturday to claim their first away point of the season.

But the Gills manager knows his team can do much better.

He said: “I am not sure we deserved a point but when Oldham had good chances it was from our mistakes.

“Overall the work-rate was very good but our passing and calmness on the ball was very poor. I think that’s why we defended too much in the game.

“When, eventually, we got a few passes right then I felt we could have scored a goal. There wasn’t enough of that.”

Taylor named the same team which started last Friday’s game at Coventry. They lost that 1-0.

A worse performance this time around brought more rewards.

“I am probably more disappointed with our performance but we got a point away from home against a team who we hardly ever get a point off away from home,” said Taylor.

“In that respect I am pleased but I know that the standard of the players and the way they set themselves recently that wasn’t a good standard.

“I am frustrated with the performance because we are a lot better than that.

“If I was frustrated with our performance because of lack of work rate then that would be even worse. It is not a case of that, too many players made some bad mistakes and lost the ball in some bad areas.”

Oldham nearly snatched the win in stoppage time but substitute Amari Morgan-Smith lifted a shot over the bar from close-range.

Taylor said: “Again, we lost the ball in such a bad area, It was ridiculous and I think it was Brennan (Dickenson) and Joe (Martin) who lost the ball.

“We allowed them to cross it and again, that to me wasn’t good play from Oldham, that was poor play from us. We were under pressure from that and it’s something we need to cut out.”
