Ady Pennock refusing to focus beyond Gillingham's midweek clash with Scunthorpe

Gillingham boss Ady Pennock isn’t looking too far ahead.

A 3-0 loss at Rochdale heaped extra pressure on the Gills head coach.

With just one win from their opening nine games of their League 1 season, the Gills are deep in trouble.

They dropped back down to 22nd in the table after another setback at the weekend.

“I am just taking it one day at a time,” said Pennock.

“We will dust ourselves down and look at the problems that we have created for ourselves and then go from there.

“This is the industry we are in, this is it. There are always ups and downs. We have to look forward to Tuesday (at home to Scunthorpe).”

Pennock admitted he had given himself at least another game after last weekend’s win over Charlton, but the nature of Saturday’s loss will add extra pressure on the manager.

They were poor in the first half, conceding two goals and having striker Tom Eaves sent off.

Chairman Paul Scally is due back in the country on Monday after visiting Sri Lanka last week with the Take Heart Mercy Mission charity.

Pennock is sure to be quizzed by the chairman ahead of the game against Scunthorpe but the Gills head coach insisted again at the weekend that he wouldn’t walk away.

“I am not a quitter. I never will be,” stated Pennock. “It is not in my genes to be a quitter.”

The Gills are desperate to avoid a relegation scrap, which they became embroiled in towards the end of last season.

But they look set to be in the thick of the basement battle and Pennock is determined to lead them to safety.

“By hook or by crook we have to,” said the under-fire manager. “There is a long way to go yet.”
