Max Ehmer could be set for a regular place back in the Gillingham starting XI.
Injuries to John Egan and Adedeji Oshilaja last Saturday led to a recall for German centre-back Ehmer and he didn’t disappoint.
He helped the Gills keep a clean sheet against Doncaster Rovers for a 1-0 home win.
Ehmer is set to start again on Saturday, possibly alongside a fit-again John Egan, and for Gills boss Justin Edinburgh, it’s now up to the defender to keep his place in the team.
Edinburgh said: “I thought Max was outstanding on Saturday as I thought he was at Birmingham (in the League Cup). That is what you are looking for in your squad.
“There are no egos, no feeling sorry for yourself, it is a real competition for places here at the club and that has been shown, whoever has stepped in has really hit the ground running.
“If I am going to make sure it is right here then if people come in and do well they will keep their place. He has certainly got a good foundation for his place in the team.”
Oshilaja is unlikely to be fit for this weekend but Egan is closing in on a return.
