Gillingham head coach Stephen Clemence predicts the League 2 play-off race will go down to the wire.

The Gills, in ninth, are only outside the top seven on goal difference after Tuesday’s 2-2 home draw against Swindon following last Friday’s 3-1 victory at Notts County - the side in the final play-off berth.

Clemence’s side had to come from behind in their last two fixtures but four points is a decent return as they head towards the business end of the season.

It’s a much better position than the club found themselves in this time last year, though, when they were just outside the relegation zone.

Clemence said: “We seem to be doing things the wrong way around a lot at the moment.

“We will have to go to Newport [on Saturday] and try to get a result. I was kind of hoping to win this one and then you can go to the Newport game and look at it maybe slightly differently.

“I know what [points] tally I would like the team to get to if we’re going to have a chance of being successful this year.

“I think it’s going to go down to the wire, isn’t it? A lot of teams are beating each other. But we’re in the mix and we have got 15 games to go.

“So, I think a lot of people who look back at this football club maybe a year ago would be happy to be saying that because, last year, the club was in a little bit of trouble.”

Clemence feels his team have found a much better rhythm since the festive period ahead of their trip to Newport, the Welsh outfit beaten 3-1 at home by Notts County in midweek.

He said: “The boys are in a lot better place now than even before Christmas. At Christmas time, we really started to improve when we changed the system.”
