Steve Lovell chalked off another first for the Gills on Saturday.

A first ever win at Portsmouth came just over two months after achieving the same feat at Charlton.

No wonder the Gills boss was happy, claiming his eighth away win of the season.

He said: “It is great to win any game, but to go there and win is special, especially when you haven’t done it before, it’s lovely.

“We go above Portsmouth now on goal difference. it’s a big club, they’ve been in the Premier League. It is a great stadium and with good support, but it is only 11 people out on the pitch.

“What counts is out on that field and every one of those players deserves a really good pat on the back.”

The Gills had to come from a goal down to win the match, scoring all three of their goals in the second half.

Half-time sub Conor Wilkinson netted the first, three minutes after the restart.

Lovell said: “Conor shouted out at half time that we hadn’t had a shot on target yet and I said, ‘well go and do it then’, he went ‘okay’.

“He is a confident young man, he is a talent and we are improving his work ethic every week. I said he would have a say in this season.”

Wilkinson was also claiming the second, getting a touch on Lee Martin’s cross with his hair. The ball ended up in the net.

Former striker Lovell said: “Conor claimed he got a touch and I told him I used to claim them when I was 10 yards away so he has got a right to claim it, but that is between them two, it doesn’t matter, we got the three points.”

Martin sealed the points with a strike that nobody else could claim, finding the far corner from outside the box.

“I am pleased for him,” said the manager.

“He is a tremendous professional, he is a leader, he inspires the team and he drives us on.

“He and Scott Wagsaff are the older heads in the side and there is no substitute for experience “
