Josh Pritchard was red-carded for Gillingham in their development team game at Bournemouth on Tuesday.
Pritchard, who was returning from a hamstring injury, was sent off following a challenge on Bournemouth’s Mohamed Coulibaly in a game that finished 2-2.
The Gills had led the match 2-0 thanks to goals from Brennan Dickenson and Antonio German.
Dickenson, one of a handful of senior players who made the trip, scored the opening goal with a close-range header.
German – back with the Gills following a month-long stint on loan at Conference Premier side Aldershot – doubled the advantage with a strike two minutes from time.
Reports from Bournemouth described German’s effort as a “stunner” as he found the top corner.
Gillingham, down to 10 men with 20 minutes left, were unable to hang on though in their Final Third Development league encounter, conceding two injury-time goals.
Josh Carmichael converted from the penalty spot past keeper Tom Hadler to halve the deficit and substitute Ben Whitfield levelled with what was almost the last kick of the game.
