Gillingham’s hopes of survival received a boost on Tuesday night without kicking a ball.
Most of their relegation rivals were in midweek action and none of them managed a win. The Gills started the evening three points from safety and that’s the way it remains after a busy night of football.
Morecambe were denied a shock win at Bolton as the hosts struck an injury-time equaliser while Fleetwood Town, AFC Wimbledon and Crewe Alexandra all lost.
Crewe’s hopes of survival look all-but over after a 3-1 home to defeat to Portsmouth, which leaves them bottom of the pile and eight points from safety.
It leaves five other teams battling it out to avoid being one of the other three teams to be relegated.
Morecambe were so close to a much-needed three points against Bolton, a team that just days earlier had proved to be a class apart from Gillingham, cruising to a 3-0 win at Priestfield. A 94th minute goal denied Morecambe a win as their game ended 1-1.
Wimbledon and Fleetwood sit just outside of the drop zone, the pair separated on goal difference. The Dons were beaten 2-0 by Plymouth while Fleetwood surrendered a half-time lead to lose 3-1 at Sunderland. Both are now on 33 points.
Gillingham, with 30 points, head to second from bottom Doncaster on Saturday for a crunch match.
