Gillingham boss Peter Taylor was pleased his side kept believing on Saturday.

A goal from Cody McDonald after 83 minutes bagged the Gills a point from their visit to Rochdale.

Taylor said: “We had some good chances in the second half and I was delighted with the character of the players. We stuck at it and we didn’t give in.

“If we were to stop making wrong decisions then we will start to get a bit more confidence in our game. If we make wrong decisions and putting ourselves under pressure then that’s why at times we are on the back foot.

“Sometimes we caused ourselves problems but I have to say, the work rate of the players and the belief that they could get back in it, was very good.”

The Gills were a goal down at the break as Peter Vincenti lost his marker to head home.

“Somebody who had the player (from the initial corner) should have stayed with him,” said the Gills manager.

“The ball was cleared from the corner and they call it second phase. You have to stay with your man, first phase or second, and we didn’t do that.

"We allowed Vincenti to be at the far post on his tod. He is six foot three and a difficult one to defend.

“It was a poor goal for us to give away but I thought we had a couple of decent moves before that, where we got Bradley Dack in down the side, and we also had a tremendous chance with Cody McDonald.”

It was McDonald who popped up with the late leveller.

“It may have looked and ugly one, or whatever, but he still had a little bit to do,” said Taylor.

“He needed to put a chip on it to get it up in the air and had it gone on the floor it might have been blocked.”
