Gillingham chairman Paul Scally turns off Ady Pennock's final game in charge at Rochdale

12:00, 27 September 2017

Gills chairman Paul Scally admitted he couldn’t watch the end of last weekend’s game at Rochdale.

Sixty minutes viewing was enough to convince him that he needed to make a change.
Mr Scally was watching in Dubai and admitted he was disgusted by what he saw, as the Gills were beaten 3-0.

A meeting with Ady Pennock on Monday led to a mutual termination of the head coach’s contract.

The Gills chairman said: “I shut down the computer after 60 minutes because I was so disgusted and horrified with what I was watching.

“I apologise to the fans who travelled to Rochdale and had to stay and watch the final 30 minutes. I only knew Tomas (Holy) had saved a penalty on Sunday evening after I arrived back in the UK.

“As a result of that (performance) and obvious concerns with the team generally, I had a discussion with Ady first thing (on Monday) and we agreed that we would cancel his contract by mutual consent, along with Jamie Day.”

Mr Scally put director of football Peter Taylor in charge of team affairs, assisted by coaches Steve Lovell, Mark Patterson and Glen Johnson. Fitness coach Neil Withington has remained at the club.

“I am sorry it didn’t work out in a more positive way,” added Mr Scally. “Ady and his team worked exceptionally hard and in a very honest and professional manner. (They) deserved better from the players.”
