Gillingham Women’s captain Vicky Ashton-Jones has taken over as manager on an interim basis.

Described by club chairman Kevin Hake as a “born leader” she will take charge of the side ahead of their Women’s FA Cup third round game at AFC Wimbledon this Sunday.

Gillingham are on the hunt for a new manager after Josh Oatham’s decision to stand down at the weekend after three seasons in charge.

A club statement said: “We’re delighted to announce that Vicky Ashton-Jones has agreed to take on the role of interim manager until a successor is found.

“Vicky is a respected voice in the dressing room and has plenty of experience of playing at the highest level.”

Oatham admitted last week’s 2-0 league defeat to Bridgwater United was a “disappointing way to finish” after a successful spell in charge during what was a tough time for the club. They won the Kent FA Women's Cup final last season.

It’s back to cup action for the women this Sunday with an away game against Wimbledon at Plough Lane (2pm). The Gills have overcome Millwall and Dulwich Hamlet in the previous two rounds and come up against a side from Division 1 South East.

Mr Hake said: “Vicky has stepped up when the club has needed it and she will take us into our important FA Cup game versus AFC Wimbledon.

“She is a born leader and was the natural choice to take the role after Josh’s announcement to step down.”
