09:36, 23 October 2023

Medway produced a dramatic comeback but their winning run came to an end when they were beaten 22-17 by visitors Old Colfeians in Regional 2 South East on Saturday.

Medway started brightly, a huge tackle by Medway No.13 Max Bullock kept the visitors on the back foot. The visitors disrupted almost every breakdown and denied Medway the fast ball they wanted.

After soaking up Medway pressure for the first 15 minutes, Colfe started to gain confidence and they took advantage of a yellow card for Josh Maso by going ahead with two well-taken penalties.

The visitors stepped up the energy and intensity and a simple but effective back row move saw the flanker score in the corner to put them 11-0 ahead.

Medway lost Matt Wadhams to injury but captain Anthony Clement moved into scrum-half while another penalty kick saw Colfes lead 14-0 at the break.

Another penalty early in the second half increased the deficit before Medway’s improbable comeback started with 15 minutes left.

A scrum five metres out saw flanker Todd Johnson dive over to score an unconverted try.

Jack Johnson then fed Joshua Knight who received a wide pass and scored in the corner to make it 17-10.

The intense Medway pressure finally became too much for the visitors with Jack Nickalls scoring the third try and full-back Charlie Wardzynski’s conversion levelled the scores at 17-17.

It looked as though Medway had done enough to take a share of the spoils but Colfes immediately charged down the clearance kick and went through to score the final try and snatch a dramatic victory.

Medway are without a game next weekend so their next action is a trip to Reeds-Weybridge on Saturday, November 4.
