Manager Steve Lovell is focusing on League 1 survival at Gillingham before anything else

06:00, 25 January 2018

Gills boss Steve Lovell isn’t looking beyond this season, insisting he’s achieved nothing yet.

Three straight wins have seen Gillingham surge into the top half of the table but the gap to the bottom four in League 1 remains only seven points.

They host Fleetwood this weekend, looking to make it four wins from four in January.

Lovell is conscious of the gap, however, and knows they still have some way to go before they achieve their no.1 objective.

He said: “It makes you wonder if we hadn’t been on this run where we would have been.

“All the teams around us are winning as well and picking up points.

"It is getting tighter and tighter between the top and the bottom now, much tighter, and we have to be mindful of that.

“The goal since we took over was to make sure we are in this league next year.

“That is still a priority and anything after that is a bonus. The quicker we get to 50-51 points, the quicker we can see where we’re going.

“I haven’t achieved anything yet, nothing at all. All I am trying to do is to get to the stage where I can say, ‘right we have done this and now we can move on’.”

Lovell initially agreed to manage the Gills until the end of the season, which remains the case.

There have been calls from fans for the club to hand him a longer-term deal, after lifting the Gills from second bottom to 11th in three months, but the manager insists he remains focused on the present.

“Until we get to that 50-51 points, nothing is done,” he said.

“Don’t get me wrong, we have done well, but at the end of the day you can do well and still end up in trouble. I am not looking beyond this season.
