Louis Greene will be fighting for a Commonwealth title later this month.

The Strood boxer will travel to Aberdeen to try and become the first professional fighter to defeat Scotsman Dean Sutherland (13-0) and with it land the Commonwealth Boxing Council Superwelterweight title.

Green (14-3) is no stranger to big fights, challenging for the English title earlier this year. He went the distance against Harry Scarff but lost on points.

He’s been beaten by Lewis Crocker in a WBO European title fight and to Larry Ekundayo in an IFB European showdown.

Never one to turn down an opportunity, he’ll be in the away corner again and the underdog in a fight that he won’t fear.

Father and coach John Greene said: “From very early on Lou was matched quite hard, fighting Freddy Kiwitt (winning on points) which was a hard fight and then Ekundayo. He has had it hard.

“He fought Lukasz Wierzbicki when when he was 18-0 (and won with a second round TKO). He has been in the deep end many times.

“He is not looking at this as his hardest fight but he is looking at it as probably the best opportunity.

“Obviously the commonwealth title will open doors, would lead to better opportunities, so the pressure is on in that sense but I think opponent-wise he (Sutherland) is obviously very good and he was the WBO champion and WBC silver titlist at welterweight, he is moving up in weight, so he is obviously no slouch himself but Lou is very confident.

“His losing fights have been learning fights and he has improved after every one of those, he has not been disheartened, they have obviously been upsetting but it has not put him off at all. A lot of kids will lose a couple of fights and that’s it, they pack up, but Lou is still as keen as ever.

“You get mentally stronger by beating good opposition, you have tested yourself and you have proved it to yourself, he is in a good place now, he is fit and strong and champing at the bit for this.”

Greene is ranked no.6 in the UK super welterweight standings and bounced back from the Scarff loss in May with a loosener out in Poland, defeating Tomasz Nowicki with a fifth-round TKO victory, ending the unbeaten record of his European opponent who had been 10-0 before the match-up.

The commonwealth title fight will take place at the Beach Ballroom, Aberdeen on Saturday, November 26. Tim Tszyu has vacated the belt following his win in July 2021, moving on up after winning the WBO Global super welter title.

Aberdeen’s southpaw Sutherland, meanwhile, has been preparing for the forthcoming fight by sparring with European welterweight champion David Avanesyan ahead of his home-city date. He has recently returned from a warm weather training camp in Los Angeles where he trained with legendary coach Freddie Roach at his Wild Card gym.

Greene has been training full-time closer to home, sparring Faversham’s talented southpaw Alex Branson-Cole (3-0) among others.
