Jordan Stubbington scored a hat-trick as Medway thrashed Cobham 45-15 in London 1 South.

In front of 100 Medway old boys, in attendance for the club's annual reunion lunch, the hosts ran in seven tries to ensure Richard Petch's 150th senior appearance went exactly to script.

Coach Taff Gwilliam was particularly pleased with his side's display for the majority of the first half.

He said: "We are delighted to have won with the bonus point. Cobham are a well organised, talented team.

"The first 38 minutes was some of the best controlled rugby, in the elements, that we have played this season.”

Cobham missed the chance to strike first when they missed a penalty after 12 minutes. Instead, 10 minutes later, Medway led when an overthrow from Cobham in their own half was regathered by Tom Beaumont, who made good ground. Medway went through the phases and it was Max Easton who went over in the corner for an unconverted try.

A last-ditch tackle denied Max Bullock a try, but the ensuing scrum saw Medway pressure Cobham and turn the ball over for Stubbington's first. Dan Harvey converted to put Medway 12-0 ahead.

Bullock added the hosts' third score on 32 minutes, from a counter attack in partnership with Mo Pangarker, and Harvey added the extras.

However with two minutes of the half remaining Cobham were back in it. Good field position and indifferent tackling allowed the away side to drive over from a ruck on the Medway line. The converted score was doubled straight from the restart. Medway won a penalty and kicked upfield where the lineout saw a wide pass intercepted in Cobham's 22 and the visitors ran the distance for another converted try.

Any second-half nerves were calmed when, with the Cobham defence narrowed, Antony Clement and Jack Johnson combined to put Sean Marriott away to score. Harvey converted for 26-14.

A lineout led to Medway's next try. Bill Sandison and Easton combined to win the ball, Medway drove for the line and just as Cobham stopped the drive Stubbington broke off to drive over from short range.

Bullock claimed his second try when a lineout steal allowed Medway to attack the opposition midfield through Marriott. He fed Bullock to race over, with Harvey again adding the extras.

The final score of the game arrived late on, Cobham were pinned on their own line and following a number of penalties Medway opted for the attacking scrum. A well-executed pushover try saw Stubbington score his hat-trick before Harvey converted from the tee once more.

The win leaves Medway second in the table, five points off top spot. They visit third-placed Camberley on Saturday.
