Young defender Callum Davies was handed the captain’s armband on Tuesday night for the first time.

And Gills boss Peter Taylor said it was the 21-year-old’s “excellent attitude” that saw him rewarded with the honour.

Davies has often played second fiddle at Gills since being promoted to the first team but he led the side out against Stevenage in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Taylor said: “I thought he was excellent. He has trained well and shown an excellent attitude.

“He was disappointed not to be involved on Saturday (against Crewe). I might have given him a clue that he could be but I went with what I did.

“His attitude has been spot on and I thought he played like a captain. He has been rewarded for his attitude.”

Davies has played in the defensive midfield role for the Gills but playing in the back four is where he favours.

“He can play in midfield but he prefers to play centre-half,” added Taylor. “He doesn’t like that midfield tag. He wants to play at the back.”
