Midfielder Alfie Jones was better placed than anyone to watch Gillingham team-mate Connor Ogivlie volley home the winner against Sunderland on Saturday.

The Southampton loanee thought the chance might have been heading his way before former Spurs defender Ogilvie took it on himself to find the net with a quality finish.

“I was just behind him and I saw it perfectly,” Jones said.

“I wanted him to set me the ball but as he has swivelled, I watched like it was in slow motion and it’s gone in the top corner, after that everyone was running, everyone was buzzing.

“I was delighted for Connor and delighted for the team. There were absolute scenes at the end which was nice.”

Jones showed the same kind of composure infront of the press after boss Steve Evans gave him a kiss on the cheek.

The midfielder spoke about the good atmosphere that the recent performances have helped create in the dressing room.

“The lads in recent weeks have been unbelievable,” he said.

“We have shown aggression off the ball and we have created a lot of chances.

“We know we have a good chance against any team coming here (to Priestfield) and we are a team to be feared here.

“Confidence is sky high and we don’t fear anyone.

“We have been playing against some good teams, like Doncaster and Sunderland, we’ve been playing well and being the better team.

“The morale is unbelievable, it’s a great bunch, games are coming thick and fast and we are taking that confidence into the Christmas period.”

Saturday’s meeting against Sunderland was the third in four weeks, having beaten them in an FA Cup replay prior to the weekend.

Jones has been an ever-present for Gills and said: “It’s another win, another clean sheet, it was brilliant.

“We had a few chances first half, we hit the bar and a few people said it went in (from Brandon Hanlan). We created chances and in the end we were the better team. It showed at the end with the spirit we had.

“It was a good performance from the boys and I’m buzzing for the three points.”

It’s five clean sheets in a row at home, too.

Jones said: “It shows how hard the defence have worked, it’s unbelievable.

“We have been working on it since the start of the season because we had been leaking sloppy goals, but now we are solid, we have that compactness and organisation.”
