The Shouting Men: Gillingham's Callum Davies writes exclusively for the KM Group

00:00, 10 October 2014

I’ve been buzzing this week after signing a new contract and captaining the team to victory on Tuesday night. It might not have been the best performance but we got through at Colchester and that’s the main thing.

Nels was the hero with a couple of penalty saves and his goal but I take no responsibility as captain for leaving him behind when we left the ground.

We were all on the bus and he sent a message to us on WhatsApp saying "thanks lads – see you next week!"

He was flying in that game so we thought maybe he could get home that way instead!

It was a great honour to captain the side again and wearing the armband for the first team is the icing on the cake for me after being skipper right the way through the age groups at the club.

I’ve been here since I was seven and I can still remember being scouted by the Gills when I was playing for Rainham 84.

I joined the youth team with the likes of Jack Evans and Tom Brunt.

One of my first coaches was Bryan Bull and he’s still at the club.

The Rainham team also had a lad called Sam Bewick. Sam went to QPR but unfortunately had a bad injury just before he was about to turn pro. He’s at Faversham now.

When my current deal runs out, I’ll be 23 and ready for a testimonial!

It’s nice to have that security of another year and I hope to now keep improving and let my feet do the talking.
