The Shouting Men column with Gillingham defender Alex Lacey

I am looking forward to being back soon hopefully as I don’t want to be spectating any more!
Being away from the group has been frustrating, especially seeing how well they have been doing.
I have been back out on the training ground recently with the fitness coach and physio, just building up my level of fitness but it is never the same as being out there on the pitch.
Recently, I have been training on the side, away from the main group - just myself and the physio - but we have probably paid more attention to watching them train than with our own session.
The injury is similar to the one I had before, with my ankle but I have seen improvements and hopefully it won’t be long.
I just felt a pop in the Fleetwood game and as soon as I did I knew something was up. I couldn’t put too much weight on it and in the end they were just launching balls forward but luckily I managed to head a few of them away.
We had it scanned and it was a similar injury to before but it was just a minor setback. I took anti-inflammatories and a lot of ice baths, which wasn’t fun.
I was pretty much doing that every day during January. When it was freezing outside, it wasn’t ideal to be sitting in an ice bath for 10 to 15 minutes at a time!
If you’ve been doing leg weights you need to make sure you are fresh for the next session. I don’t miss them but I think most of the lads do them to help their recovery.
I’ve only played a few games under the gaffer but when I came back last time, I got a goal against Bristol Rovers.
We have certainly picked up a lot of momentum and been good to watch as well. I am just looking forward to joining in with matchdays again. Hopefully, I can be back full training within a week or two. It’s just a day by day thing. It is better to be right before you go back in so it is hard to put a timescale on it.
It is a positive atmosphere at the club and the gaffer has done a good job since he has taken over.
The competition for places is strong, in a lot of places. That helps keep performance levels high because you know if you get the chance, you have to perform. Everyone is working hard to get in the team and then stay in it.
We’re in quite an unpredictable division and that is good for entertainment.
My hometown club MK Dons are down there and they are probably a team that you wouldn’t associate with being in trouble with a big stadium and a lot of ambition. Things haven’t gone well for them but I am more of a Luton boy and they are going well in League 2.
I must have been at Luton eight or nine years after coming through their academy and into their first team.
You always look out for the results of your previous teams and see how they are doing and that one is the most important after our game, aside from the team you support, which for me is Arsenal.
Luton have been doing well lately and in the last few years they have been unlucky not to be up there. Hopefully, they can keep it up this season and get promoted.
Depending on where we are, it would be one of the first games I would look at when next season’s fixtures come out but we are on the way up too and we are hoping to keep it going.
