The Shouting Men: Gillingham wing-back Brennan Dickenson writes exclusively for the KM Group

I joined Gillingham as a forward but me and the gaffer spoke at the end of last season and came to the conclusion that wing-back would be the best role for me.
I played there at the start of the season and did well, so I feel I’m comfortable there now.
He pulled me in and we spoke about the best chances of me playing. With the personnel he’s brought in and the strikers he’s brought in, it was a joint decision that wing-back would be the best option.
I played left-back as a kid but I’ve had to re-learn the position. Playing forward a lot and left-midfield and being a striker, it’s quite different.
Going forward comes naturally but we’ve worked on the defensive side in training and I’ve done quite well.
I’ve scored a couple of own goals – that’s a downside – and picked up five yellow cards but that’s football for you.
I do like a tackle. A few of the boys in training will say that as well.
Tackling is fun when it comes off right. When you hurt a player it does sometimes give you a little buzz, although obviously you don’t go out there to hurt anyone.
Do I miss being a striker? Yes and no. It’s always nice to be up there and scoring goals but keeping a clean sheet in defence is just as good.
I do miss it a little bit but I can still play there and if the gaffer decides to play me there one day, then I’m happy with that.
My best time in the 100m is 11.2sec. I like to think I’m still quick but with Bradley Garmston, Ryan Jackson and Jermaine McGlashan, there’s good competition.
We still haven’t had the race that everyone’s been talking about, which we need to set up at some point but we’ve got quite a lot of pace in our team and it’s a good attribute to have.
I think Brad would win the race but we’ll have to wait and see.
