I’ve enjoyed my time here so far and am glad to have played a part in the fantastic start we’ve made.
Our first goal this season came from one of my long throws and it can be a weapon, as long as you get a lot of players into the box. We capitalised on it and made a great start and that kicked us off.
The long throws are something I have always had but that comes from being moved to right-back, which happened during my time at AFC Wimbledon.
The reserve manager was Marcus Gayle and when someone got injured I got put in there. At the time I was playing on the wing.
I remember thinking ‘I don’t want to be a right-back, I want to be a winger, scoring goals and taking on players!’ He moulded me into that position, I watched games and got to enjoy it.
I watched players like Kyle Walker. He is quick and when he gets going, he can move with the ball. I also like Nathaniel Clyne. He is solid and rarely do players get past him.
From right-back I can go on runs from deep and it improves your knowledge of the game and how to read it. I played a whole season as a right winger in the first team but when I left and joined Macclesfield, they signed me as a right-back and that’s where I have been ever since.
When I was a winger I never really took the throw-ins. I knew I had a long throw but never got to show anyone. When I got moved into right-back, I threw the ball and Marcus Gayle was like ‘what is that? You didn’t tell me you had a long throw’. Nobody asked! I have been launching them in ever since.
When I was at AFC Wimbledon I played on the right of a three-man attack. Danny Kedwell was in the centre. He contacted me when I joined the Gills and told me I would love it – he was right.
