The Shouting Men: Gillingham midfielder Scott Wagstaff writes exclusively for the KM Group

It’s a massive game for the team and for me personally when we play Charlton this weekend.

They’re my old club and I’d love to be involved but I felt my groin against Walsall on Tuesday and I’m not sure if I’ll be fit.

I’m hoping it’s nothing too serious but if I’m not right I’m not going to put myself and the boys in a situation where I won’t be of any benefit to the team.

It’s not fair and I wouldn’t do that, as much as I want to play.

I was with Charlton from the age of eight to 23. I grew up there and I’m really thankful for everything they gave me. They got my career going and I enjoyed my time there but, football-wise, leaving was the best thing that could have happened.

Chris Powell was the manager at the time and as much as the gaffer loved me, he said I might not play as much as I’d like, so it was a mutual thing to move on.

The whole package of going to Bristol City was good for me, the football and living away from home – Bristol is a great place.

I signed my scholarship at Charlton when they were in the Premier League.

It’s still a massive club and the fan-base is second to none.

It’s a shame to see what’s happened there, with the protests over the ownership, and hopefully it gets sorted out.

I still look out for their results – and City’s – but my focus is on Gillingham.

I want to be as high up in the league as I possibly can here so, no disrespect, but I’m not too fussed about Charlton at the minute.

Paul Konchesky is another Charlton old-boy.

He was before my time but I remember watching him play – he had a wand of a left foot – and it’s great to have him in the changing room at Gillingham.
