Gillingham striker Luke Norris has set his sights on being League 1 champions.

The Gills returned to the top of the table for the first time since November after beating Peterborough 2-1 on Saturday.

And Norris says there is no reason to think that Justin Edinburgh’s men should settle for anything less come the end of the season.

“Why not?” stated Norris, when asked if automatic promotion was their top target. “What’s the point of only aiming for the play-offs? Why can’t we try to finish first?

“Everyone should have that driving ambition to finish as high as possible. Now I think the top two is our priority and I think we’ll be there.

“If we can keep the winning run going then we could get away and other teams may drop off.”

Gillingham are one of the division’s in-form teams, despite letting slip two-goal leads in successive away games.

The Gills could have been as low as fifth on Saturday but finished the day top of the table after being one of only three teams in the top half to bag maximum points.

“We have made it a bit of a fortress here,” added Norris after Gills claimed their 11th win in 14 games at Priestfield.

“If you only lose one home game all season then that is championship form.

“In the last seven games, we’ve won five, drawn one and lost one. If we keep that going then no-one is going to keep up with it."
