Gillingham have reached unprecedented heights under Paul Scally’s chairmanship – but he’s not finished yet.

Mr Scally is celebrating 20 years at the helm this summer but he remains determined to take the Gills to the top.

He said: “I still don’t believe I have got near to achieving what I set out to do. The whole experience with ITV Digital set us back a good five to seven years.

“We are in League 1 and we started in League 2, so it is progress. We have enjoyed the Championship but I am desperate to get back. I want to have a crack at that now.

“We are in better shape to do that now than we were in 2000 when we last got there.”

But Mr Scally is looking beyond English football’s second tier.

He said: “We are not in the Premier League yet and I do believe that Gillingham FC can achieve Premier League football and sustain it because of the demographics of Kent and of Medway.

“Bournemouth proved what can be done this year and that’s fantastic for football. They have got into the Premier League.

“Wigan have done it, Hull have achieved it, Bolton, Blackburn, all of these places that are less a demographic than Gillingham and Medway."
