Steve Lovell says Gillingham's coaching team have final say at Priestfield

00:00, 07 September 2017

Gillingham’s coaching team are reluctant to lean too much on director of football Peter Taylor.

Gills are yet to win in League 1 this season and while Ady Pennock, Steve Lovell and Jamie Day value Taylor’s input, they’re keen to do things their way.

Lovell, who works under head coach Pennock, said: “Peter’s got a lot of experience through his career and I’ve worked with him here before.

“He has an input with us, we listen to him and he’s got good ideas.

“But, ultimately, we as a group of coaches, we’ve got to put on the field what we feel is right to win games.

“We will discuss things with Peter but we’ve been in the game long enough to understand what is required.

“He’s been great to be around, he’s got a great knowledge and all the little bits that he’s been involved with over the years, we take on board.

“Some we will use, some we won’t but that is down to us and I’m sure Peter doesn’t expect us to use everything that he says.”

The coaches are in regular contact with Taylor but it’s their show.

Lovell added: “We are strong enough characters anyway – we’ve got to be.

“The manager has got to do it the way he wants to do it. Peter understands that.

“We talk every day about things and we’ll take on board what we want to take on board. It’s nice to have someone of that experience in the background but it’s something we’ve got to do ourselves.

“We’ve got to put it right on the football field because we’re the ones that work with the players on a day-to-day basis.”
