Gillingham waiting on fitness of striker Conor Wilkinson ahead of Plymouth Argyle match in League 1

Conor Wilkinson is looking doubtful for Gillingham’s trip to Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

The big striker landed awkwardly in the Checkatrade Trophy match against Oxford United on Tuesday night, damaging his knee.

“We are going to have a look at his knee and see what the damage is,” said boss Steve Lovell.

Skipper Lee Martin is another player set to spend some time with the physio before the weekend.

Martin suffered a tight hamstring on Tuesday, forcing the manager to replace him. And if Lovell had his way, Martin wouldn’t have played at all.

He said: “I wouldn’t have played him but he wanted to play. That’s great. I brought him off because I didn’t want him to get any worse.

“We need everyone fit and ready to go for Saturday against Plymouth.”

Lovell won’t be short of defensive options for this weekend’s game after both Alex Lacey and Ben Nugent played 90 minutes in midweek.

Lovell was back on the training ground this week keen to work with certain individuals.

He said: “I have just got to get into a couple of the (players) about the way they think
about the game, their football brain.

“I will get to grips with them individually and try and get to know what they are actually thinking out on the football field, with some of the things I see out there.”
