Gillingham’s experienced midfielder Shaun Williams believes their massive weekend point will give them added belief.

The Gills clinched a 1-1 draw against league-leaders Stevenage on Saturday at Priestfield.

“It is massive,” said the midfielder, who turns 36 on Wednesday. “I think it is a good confidence booster for us that we can mix it with the teams up there.

“Hopefully we can continue that form and turn the draws into wins.”

Gillingham are becoming the draw specialists in the division, with 1-1 scorelines in their last couple of League 2 outings, either side of a 1-1 finish against Colchester United in the EFL Trophy.

No team in the division has drawn more games than the Gills, with Carlisle and Hartlepool also having six matches that have finished level.

The weekend game against Stevenage was a point well earned against a side sitting top of the pile.

“A point was probably a good result,” said the midfielder. “Given where the two teams are at the moment, we had a couple of chances, a draw is probably fair.

“We started off really well, half-time they changed their shape and made it a different game. Scott (Kashket) had a great chance [missing an open goal] but they probably should have had a penalty second half, the draw was probably the right result. It was a good workmanlike, battling performance.”

Much had been made of physical threat and how the Gills needed to stand up to it, but for Williams, nothing changed in his mindset.

He said: “I think we have had a couple of games this season where we haven’t kind of stood up and people in the dressing room were saying it’s a man’s game but it is a man’s game every week, if you can’t do that you are probably in the wrong sport, it is the bare minimum that you need to do, hopefully then your quality can shine through.”

There was also a lot said pre-match about former manager Steve Evans’ return. Not an issue for Williams, who said: “Nobody really spoke about him (in the dressing room), to be fair, he probably wanted to be the star of the show on the sidelines but he was irrelevant kind of this week.”

Gillingham are back at home this Saturday, against Barrow, now boasting a run of one defeat in nine, in all competitions.

Williams added: “We are a new team, with a lot of new signings, it is just getting steps in the right direction, different hurdles and we are starting to see that coming through.”
