Jermaine McGlashan thrilled the home crowd on Saturday but boss Peter Taylor is looking for more.

The Gillingham manager is keen to see the 26-year-old winger continue to improve.

Taylor has had to be cautious about when he has played McGlashan, due to an early season hamstring injury, but the wide-man made a big impact on his first home start at the weekend, inspiring the Gills to a 2-0 win over Crewe in League 1.

“The way he plays is why we have had to be careful with his hamstring,” said Taylor. “He puts so much effort in and the long runs that he does.

“He is a great lad, I am really pleased we have signed him and he wants to keep improving. He works really hard for the team and all he needs to do is maybe start making a few goals for the team.

“He stretches teams fantastically well and if we can get a bit more end product with him on his final touch that would be good.”

Read what Jermaine McGlashan had to say about his first home start. "Their full-back wanted me to calm down. He wasn't enjoying it but I was."

McGlashan arrived in the summer after rejecting the chance to extend his two-and-a-half year stay with Cheltenham. He started the season opener at MK Dons but missed the next two games through injury. And he is glad the Gills manager has his best interests at heart.

McGlashan said: “I started the first game of the season and then I was out. I understand the gaffer and he has eased me in.

“I want to play more but fair play to him, it’s why I have been sharp. If I see the ball I get onto it and I think it is important they analyse me because I am not one to hold back. I am feeling fresh, feeling sharp and better for it.”
