Buster Bug has been out and about touring schools in Dover, telling pupils about the fantastic prizes they could enjoy just by reading at home.

The mascot of KM Charity Team reading-reward initiative Buster’s Book Club accompanied club coordinator Kay Devine to a series of assemblies at the town’s schools.

Buster and Kay visited Dover Christ Church Academy, Green Park Community Primary School, Whitfield Aspen School and Priory Fields School.

Buster’s Book Club uses a spirit of friendly competition to make books cool, and encourages children to read more at home on Wednesday evening.

Individual schools’ classes compete against each other to register the most home-reading minutes, with a weekly trophy awarded to the one demonstrating the most application or improved performance.

And the winners of monthly inter-school challenges involving schools across Kent are rewarded with visits by celebrity storytellers such as CBeebies stars Phil Gallagher and Joanna Adeyinka-Burford or by organisations including travelling zoo Creepy Claws.

Kay said: “It was such a pleasure to visit these schools, and the children’s enthusiasm for Buster’s was great to see.

“We wish them the very best of luck with our home-reading challenges this term, and I would urge other schools in the town and the county to sign up for Buster’s now.

“With its prizes and spirit of fun, friendly competition, it is so effective at inspiring young children with a love of reading.”

Buster’s Book Club is supported by The Education People, Golding Vision, Specsavers, Leeds Castle, Diggerland, Hornby, Wildwood, Rotary, Acorns Read and Grow, Three R’s Teacher Recruitment, Buckland Media and Medway and Kent councils.
