Showers failed to put a dampener on Sunday’s (16 May) inaugural West Kent KM Big Bike Ride.
The charity event attracted some 200 bookings with riders taking on the challenge for fun or their favourite cause.
Cyclists selected a 50K or a 100K route starting from Cyclopark in Gravesend and taking in surrounding countryside – along with the notorious climb of Vigo Hill.
It was organised by the KM Charity Team to support its work with Kent schools and help other causes to raise funds.
Its collaborative fundraising model means seventy per cent of sponsorship goes to participants’ selected charities. The remainder supports event costs and the KM Charity Team's child literacy and road safety programmes.
The event is in addition to the East Kent bike ride which runs each year at Betteshanger Park, Deal.
Rider numbers were limited to ensure a COVID-secure event along with strict check-in times, social distancing and face coverings.
Volunteer marshals from South East 4×4 Response helped riders to stay on track while Southern Co-op donated refreshments.
Top fundraiser Anna Kish raised more than £1,400 for Tunbridge Wells charity Sleep Pod, which provides individual shelters to protect rough sleepers from the elements.
Other benefitting causes were Kent Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance, Parkinsons and Porchlight.
Companies interested in supporting the KM Charity Team’s events and work should contact CEO Mike Ward at mward@thekmgroup.co.uk or 07925 434871.
