Festival money helps September 11 victims

SOME of the money raised from the St Nicholas Day festival in Canterbury has been presented to a church community in New York whose premises were destroyed on September 11. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey, handed over a cheque for £500 to the congregation of St Nicholas Church during his visit to Ground Zero in New York.
Dr George Carey took the opportunity of going to the scene of the tragedy to meet emergency workers and church leaders during his attendance at the World Economic Forum in the city.
He also preached the sermon at the historic Trinity Episcopal Church in Wall Street.
Spokesman for the Anglican Communion, Canon James Rosenthal said: "The support for St Nicholas Day festival in Canterbury was overwhelming and the donation to St Nicholas Church was a mark of solidarity to that devastated community.
"The festival actually raised £2,000 and we have donated the other £1,500 to an Aids project in South Africa."
