Records tumbled at the KM Big Quiz on Friday.

The annual charity event, now in its 14th year, attracted 63 teams and raised £10k for good causes. This makes it the biggest and most successful charity wine and wisdom evening staged locally for four years.

Canterbury team Moomins snatched the champion’s trophy by one point from Medway team Supernova. The team scored a record-breaking 90 per cent of correct answers and has earned their place at the county final of the KM Big Quiz later this year when they will take on the top teams from the Medway, Maidstone and Ashford heats of the charity event. Fifty eight of the 63 teams scored more than 50 per cent of correct answers impressing event organisers.

The charity pot will be shared by the League of Friends at Canterbury Hospital, the children’s road safety service at the KM Charity Team and the the Gazette’s charity of the year, Canterbury Food Bank.

Rev Matthew Rushton, patron of Canterbury Foodbank, joined KM Charity Team chief executive Simon Dolby to host the event and thank top sponsors Shepherd Neame and Barclays bank for their support.

Faversham-based Sheps donated all the beverages for the night stocking the entire charity bar which volunteers from the Canterbury branch of Barclays manned. Barclays then matched the proceeds raised to the value of £5k, ensuring the charity pot swelled to its record-breaking level.

A new feature for the event was the KM Cash Builder which saw a random member of the audience invited to come on stage and answer a special question with £250 in cash awarded for a correct answer. Despite showing obvious pressure from having the spotlight turned on him, Peter Jones, from the team A League Apart, correctly named Bob Geldof as the Freeman of Swale with the first names Robert, Frederick, Zenon.

Quizmaster Simon Dolby said: “The event was great fun because the quiz-goers were so lively and enthusiastic. Everyone on the event team is so pleased that the event attracted almost double the number of teams as last year and was such a success financially.”

Partners praised for their backing

Top sponsors MHA MacIntyre Hudson and Fairweather Solicitors were praised by KM Big Quiz event manager Dominic Comins for their help and expertise in staging the event.

Mr Comins said the two organisations, as well as the University of Kent Sport Centre, Twice as Nice Catering and Independent Music Productions had been critical to the success of the night.

He also singled out the Wildlife Heritage Foundation, P&O Ferries and Hornby Visitor Centre for providing prizes for top teams and raffle.

Mr Comins said: “This was a great team effort from all the partners and sponsors with the contribution from Shepherd Neame and Barclays staff simply outstanding.”
