A nail-biting climax to the Canterbury heat of the KM Big Quiz saw just one point separating the top four teams.

Team members from the Moomins and We Love Fine Ants took place in a sudden death tiebreak with Moomins snatching top spot by a fraction of a second. Both teams will join Supernova and the Unicorn in the county final when they take on top teams from the Medway, Ashford and Maidstone heats at the end of the year.

The event was held at the University of Kent sports hall on Friday and attracted 49 teams and raised £8k for good causes with the League of Friends at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital, the Gazette’s Charity of the Year MNDA East Kent as well as children’s literacy and road safety causes to receive a share of the pot.

Three generations of the Miller family, from Wincheap, Canterbury took part in the quiz with 15-year-old Oscar Hopkins, mum Jae and grand parents Sheila and Stewart Miller involved. The Millers have been taking part in the Big Quiz events since the event was first launched 17 years ago.

Sheila Miller said: “We love the Big Quiz and have supported it most years since the start when the first event was held at the Westgate Hall.”

Emily Harrington of Canterbury won the Win in 10 competition by answering a sudden death question on stage in front of the audience of 300 guests. She won a pair of Eurostar tickets.

The event was supported by Shepherd Neame, who provided beverages for the charity bar and volunteers from Barclays bank, Canterbury who manned the bar and used their pound for pound scheme to boost the amount raised for good causes.

Armadillo self storage, Independent Music Productions, Eurostar, Kent Sport, Office Angels and Canterbury McDonalds provided additional support to the event.
Event questionmaster Simon Dolby said:” The small army of helpers, led by staff from Barclays, ensured the event was a success. Everyone from the benefiting charities are so grateful for their support.”
