Three types of stone, limestone, ragstone and flint were used by skilled medieval masons, to create the intricate chequerboard design of the Old Stone House in Wickhambreaux.

One of the oldest inhabited buildings in Kent, it is said to have once been home to the wife of Edward, the Black Prince.

Princess Joan held the manor of Wickhambreaux from 1353 to 1386 and is better known to history as the Fair Maid of Kent and the mother of Richard II.

The five-bedroom Old Stone House opens on to the village green and looks over the Little Stour one of the tributaries of the River Stour.

It is under a Kent peg tiled roof and the house, which is believed to have 12th century origins, is now listed Grade II* listed.

It has a heated outdoor swimming pool and stands in 0.4 acres of lawned gardens.

There are well-proportioned rooms with exposed timber ceilings, period doors, inglenook fireplaces and a staircase with sunlight flooding through leaded Tudor windows. The dining room is a gem, with a richly timbered ceiling and large inglenook fireplace.

The drawing room is also a well-proportioned room, while the kitchen, formerly the village shop, has been extended to provide a breakfast room with a vaulted ceiling and french windows opening on to the terrace and garden. On the first floor, the master bedroom and guest bedroom both have an en suite. There are three further bedrooms and a family bathroom.

A staircase leads to the extensive open, boarded attic floor, which the agent considers offers potential for further accommodation subject to the relevant consents. The house has garages and a fine yew tree, complete with treehouse. Wickhambreaux has a variety of distinctive, substantial period houses, together with St Andrew’s church and a pub.
